What is Otoplasty?
Whether an ear is abnormally shaped due to a birth defect or if they both visibly stick out from the head, these issues can cause self-consciousness for both children and adults. Many people feel that their ears distract others from their otherwise normal appearance.
The entire shape of your face is affected by the way the ears sit on your head. Ears that protrude noticeably tend to draw too much attention to themselves and can distract from your face.
Our otoplasty in Mount Pleasant, SC, also known as “ear surgery” or “ear pinning,” is a solution that improves the shape, structure, and position of the ears with minimal scarring and little recovery.
How is Otoplasty Done?
Everyone’s ears are unique, and everyone will have different needs and goals. Otoplasty is a surgery that requires extreme attention to detail. After all, there’s an exact duplicate immediately available for comparison on the other side of your head. Depending on the extent of the otoplasty surgery, Dr. Funcik will make incisions in discrete creases behind the ear. It’s impossible to recreate the exact same measurements from one side to the next, but Dr. Funcik will carefully take measurements throughout the procedure and only complete the closure when the measurements of your ears are within 1 to 2 mm of each other. The cartilage of the ear is then modified, and in cases of protruding ears, the ears are permanently sutured in a more natural, aesthetically pleasing position against the head.
During your ear surgery in Mount Pleasant, SC, Dr. Funcik creates results that look natural and symmetrical, and maintain the balance between the rest of your facial features.

What is Recovery Like?
A bandage is applied in the operating room and removed the following morning. The day following surgery, you will be advised to wear a tennis style headband continuously for one week and then for several weeks at night to protect your ears while you sleep.
Everyone is different when it comes to pain tolerance, Dr. Funcik can provide you with several pain management options throughout your recovery process. If you’re experiencing intense pain (especially one side more so than the other), increased bleeding through the bandage, or a high temperature, please call our office.
But complications such as this are extremely rare. While otoplasty is a safe procedure, all risks and possible complications will be discussed with you by Dr. Funcik prior to surgery. Be sure to ask him any questions you may have if you’re considering ear surgery in the Mount Pleasant, SC area.
The results of otoplasty will last a lifetime and are often visible immediately after the initial healing phase when bandages are removed.
Am I a Good Candidate for Otoplasty?
Depending on the age of the individual, certain restrictions apply for this procedure.
Children younger than eight years old are typically not approved for otoplasty, as their developing cartilage may not be strong enough to endure surgical correction. Ideally children should also not have untreated ear infections and be able to vocalize their feelings about the surgery.
Teenagers and adults who are considering otoplasty should be non-smokers and have no contraindicating medical conditions that could impair surgery. They should also not have a history of untreated, chronic ear infections.
Anyone planning to have otoplasty should have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure, and should also have the ability to follow instructions for at-home ear care during the recovery process.
