Transform Your Ears with Otoplasty

Ears that naturally protrude out from the head, are misshapen, or have been damaged due to an injury can be corrected or modified with a simple procedure called an otoplasty.

Located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, Thomas Funcik, MD serves the greater Charleston area. Performing ear surgery in Charleston is one of his specialties. Contact us today to schedule a consultation with double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Funcik.

What is Otoplasty?

Whether an ear is abnormally shaped due to a birth defect or if they both visibly stick out from the head, these issues can cause self-consciousness for both children and adults. Many people feel that their ears distract others from their otherwise normal appearance.

The entire shape of your face is affected by the way the ears sit on your head. Ears that protrude noticeably tend to draw too much attention to themselves and can distract from your face.

Otoplasty, also known as “ear surgery” or “ear pinning,” is a solution that improves the shape, structure, and position of the ears with minimal scarring and little recovery.

How is Otoplasty Done?

Everyone’s ears are unique, and everyone will have different needs and goals. Otoplasty is a surgery that requires extreme attention to detail. After all, there’s an exact duplicate immediately available for comparison on the other side of your head. Depending on the extent of the otoplasty surgery, Dr. Funcik will make incisions in discrete creases behind the ear. It’s impossible to recreate the exact same measurements from one side to the next, but Dr. Funcik will carefully take measurements throughout the procedure and only complete the closure when the measurements of your ears are within 1 to 2 mm of each other. The cartilage of the ear is then modified, and in cases of protruding ears, the ears are permanently sutured in a more natural, aesthetically pleasing position against the head.

During your ear surgery in Mount Pleasant, SC, Dr. Funcik creates results that look natural and symmetrical, and maintain the balance between the rest of your facial features.

What are the Benefits of Otoplasty?

Otoplasty offers a range of benefits for those seeking to enhance the appearance of their ears. Key advantages of ear surgery in Charleston with Dr. Funcik include:

  • Improved facial balance: Otoplasty reduces the prominence of protruding ears, creating a more harmonious look.
  • Boost in confidence: Many patients feel more self-assured after correcting ear concerns.
  • Lifelong results: Once the ears are reshaped, the outcome is permanent.
  • Minimal scarring: Incisions are placed discreetly behind the ears, resulting in barely visible scars.

Dr. Funcik’s expertise as a double board-certified surgeon ensures natural, symmetrical results tailored to your unique features.

Am I a Good Candidate for Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is generally recommended for patients over eight years old with fully developed ear cartilage. Candidates should be non-smokers, without untreated chronic ear infections or health issues that may impact surgery. Realistic expectations and a commitment to following post-op care instructions are also important. If you’re interested in otoplasty in Charleston or Mount Pleasant, SC, contact us to learn more.

What is Otoplasty Recovery Like?

A bandage is applied in the operating room and removed the following morning. The day following surgery, you will be advised to wear a tennis style headband continuously for one week and then for several weeks at night to protect your ears while you sleep.

Everyone is different when it comes to pain tolerance, Dr. Funcik can provide you with several pain management options throughout your recovery process. If you’re experiencing intense pain (especially one side more so than the other), increased bleeding through the bandage, or a high temperature, please call our office.

But complications such as this are extremely rare. While otoplasty is a safe procedure, all risks and possible complications will be discussed with you by Dr. Funcik prior to surgery. Be sure to ask him any questions you may have if you’re considering otoplasty in Charleston.

The results of otoplasty will last a lifetime and are often visible immediately after the initial healing phase when bandages are removed.

Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) FAQs

At what age can a child have otoplasty?

Otoplasty can typically be performed once ear cartilage is fully developed, usually around age 7–8. Adults of any age may also benefit.

Will my results be permanent?

Yes. Once ears are surgically reshaped and sutured, the results are long-lasting and do not “undo” with time.

What is recovery like after otoplasty?

A bandage is worn the first night, followed by a protective headband for about a week, then at night for several weeks. Most patients return to school or work within a week.

Will otoplasty affect my hearing?

No. Ear surgery changes only the external shape and position of the ears and does not impact hearing ability.

Will there be scars after otoplasty?

Incisions are placed behind the ear in natural folds, so scars are hidden and typically fade over time.

Is otoplasty painful?

Most patients experience only mild discomfort and are well-managed with medication. Severe pain is rare and should be reported to the surgeon.

Can otoplasty correct only one ear?

Yes. While many patients choose surgery on both ears for balance, Dr. Funcik can correct just one ear if needed for symmetry.

Dear Beloved Patient,

I am writing to share that I will be transitioning toward retirement from my facial plastic surgery practice in the near future. This has been a thoughtful and gradual process, and many of you will begin to see this transition take place within the practice.

From performing more than 10,000 facial procedures to building lasting relationships with patients who have traveled from across the country and around the world, I am deeply thankful for the trust you have placed in me.

One of my highest priorities throughout this process has been ensuring that my patients continue to receive the exceptional care they deserve. With that in mind, I am pleased to share that Dr. Jason Ulm is now leading the practice. I have complete confidence in Dr. Ulm, whose commitment to excellence, innovation, and patient-centered care closely reflects the values that have guided my work throughout my career. Like me, he prioritizes natural results, thoughtful collaboration, and a dedication to each patient’s individual goals.

Over this transition period, I have been working closely with Dr. Ulm and the team to ensure continuity of care and a seamless experience for all patients. Whether you are considering surgery, maintaining your results, or exploring non-surgical treatments, you can feel confident that you are in capable and trusted hands.

No action is needed for your medical records to remain here at the office.

While stepping away from clinical practice is bittersweet, I am excited for the opportunity to spend more time with my growing family. My grandchildren live in Costa Rica, Kauai, and Greensboro, and I look forward to being a more active part of their lives and creating memories together beyond our Zoom calls.

I have greatly valued our patient-physician relationship and wish you continued health. If you have any questions or need assistance in the future, Dr. Jason Ulm and the team at Ulm Plastic Surgery would be happy to help. Please feel free to call the office at 843-884-3277.
